Is your computer turning ON and then immediately turning OFF when switched ON. If so, then your computer is facing serious electrical short circuit to some hardware.
You may wonder how a computer that was working fine till now, suddenly faces a electrical short. There may be numerous reasons for the computer to face this problem, (e.g.) moving your computer from one place to another. Over time wires tend to wiggle out causing this problem. We show you how to track down the cause of the problem and to eliminate it.
Note: You may also face this problem even in a new computer, if you are not careful enough when you are assembling the PC. So you must make sure that the motherboard, inside the computer does not make any have any metal contacts.
Steps for troubleshooting
You can be quite sure that your computer is facing critical electrical short if it turns ON and OFF. There is less probability of some other problem for which your computer behaves like this. Now the only thing is that we need to find where the electrical short occurs.
This step often proves to be a magical which makes your computer turn ON. The loose connection may be the major problem for the short circuit of the peripherals. If required you need to open up your computer and fix all the wires that would have wiggled out.
This step is an important step as many computers will start after fixing all the loose connections. If that don’t resolve your problem, continue your troubleshooting by following the steps given.
If your computer passes above steps then, your computer is facing some serious electrical shorting. Open you computer case and check for any electrical shorting.
Note: It is necessary to spend ample time on the above two steps to find the cause of the electrical short. If not, it could lead to costly hardware replacements, due to small electrical short.
As your computer turned ON for few seconds, doesn’t mean that your Power Supply Unit is working fine. You need to test your Power Supply unit manually to ensure that the power supply unit is working fine.
In case you have not used your computer for a long time or if you have not cleaned your computer for a long time. You should clean inside your computer as there may be chances that your dust may be accumulated inside your computer which blocks the connection between your peripherals and preventing your computer from startup.
Remove and connect all the peripherals such as RAM, Graphics Card and any expansion slots your computer have. This step is to establish firm connection with your computer peripherals which would have wiggled out in the long run.
Perform this step if you are sure that your computer passed all the above steps as the chances of power button short is very slim. But there is chance that power button may stick outside to the metal casing causing the computer to turn off.
6. Start the computer with essential hardware only
Starting computer with essential hardware means starting it with following components.
- Mother Board
- KeyBoard and Mouse
- Of course you will need a Power Supply unit
You can start your computer with the components given above. If your computer starts successfully, then you can rest easy that major parts are doing well in your computer and proceed to point 7. Else if your computer again turns OFF then jump to point 8.
7. Add hardware one by one to check whether your computer turns ON fine.
Add the expansion cards, Graphics Cards or whatever hardware you may have one by one. Each time you add a component, turn ON your computer to ensure that computer turns on with the hardware you have installed.
At any point of time, if your computer does not turn ON after installing a particular hardware, try removing that hardware and try again. If your computer turns ON without that particular hardware but fails to turn ON with that hardware, you can make sure that hardware is faulty.
8. Replace essential hardware with working ones
If your computer does not turn ON even after starting with essential hard ware, then try starting it a hardware that is working fine.
Note: Hardware from your friend system which is working fine will serve this. Be careful to make sure that you don’t make problems in your friend’s computer in the process of removing hardware.
Replace the essential hardware one by one to determine which is faulty. After making sure the faulty hardware, replace the hardware with new ones.
